Q3: How do I get my Commander to approve SkillBridge?

Answer: Commander approval for SkillBridge is discretionary based on unit manning and operational requirements. To maximize your approval chances:

  • Submit your application 12 to 9 months before your separation date.
  • Demonstrate that all deployment commitments, unit turnover checklists, and pilot training handoffs are complete.
  • Highlight how your SkillBridge timeline fits your remaining active duty service commitment.

Q4: Can I combine DoD SkillBridge with Terminal Leave and Permissive PTDY?

Answer: Yes! Service members frequently combine SkillBridge (up to 180 days), Permissive TDY (PTDY for job hunting / house hunting, if authorized), and earned Terminal Leave. However, the total cumulative length of SkillBridge + Terminal Leave cannot exceed the 180-day window prior to your separation date.

Q5: How do I use my Post-9/11 GI Bill for ATP CTP training?

Answer: Under 38 U.S.C. Chapter 33, eligible Post-9/11 GI Bill beneficiaries can apply vocational flight training or non-degree flight school benefits toward ATP CTP course tuition at FAA Part 142 approved training centers.
